The Inspiring Journey Behind Care Connections

Patty Behrens: Turning Pain into Purpose

"The measure of a man’s greatness is not in the number of servants he has, but in the number of people he serves."

This guiding principle resonates deeply with Patty Behrens, whose life story is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the transformative power of service.

In 1999, at the age of 42, Patty Behrens faced the unthinkable. She lost her husband suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving her a widow with three young children. The devastation was overwhelming, as she struggled to be a solo parent and grieve the loss of her husband. With the unwavering support of friends and reliance on God, she persevered, keeping her head above water and navigating the challenges of her new reality. Yet, Patty did more than just survive—she transformed her pain into purpose.

Through her own struggles, Patty became acutely aware of the unique hardships widows face, especially those unprepared for the myriad tasks and responsibilities that often follow such a loss. While her grief immobilized her at times, she was strongly prompted by God to start a helping ministry for widows, and so she channeled into action. Along with a group of like-minded friends, Patty founded Care Connections, a ministry dedicated to supporting widows in need and connecting them to the family of God. They knew it would only succeed if they totally relied on God; thus the logo and moto, F.R.O.G. (Fully Relying On God) was adopted along with the verse, “…Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” James 1:27.

The Mission of Care Connections

The mission of Care Connections was simple yet profound: to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support for widows by helping with home projects, connecting with them personally, and praying for them. Whether it was repairing a leaky faucet, trimming the bushes, or tackling household projects, Patty and her team aimed to fill the gaps left behind by their loss. While doing projects is the process, relationally connecting with widows is the primary focus. As Care Connections grew, so did its impact. By 2025, the ministry celebrated its 23rd  year of service, a milestone that highlighted not only its longevity but its enduring relevance. Over the years, this invaluable ministry has been sustained by an army of volunteers—entire families, in many cases—who dedicate their time and energy to making an impact with the windows in our community.

The Power of Volunteerism:

“The only way you can serve God, is by serving other people.”

One of the most remarkable aspects of Care Connections is its emphasis on volunteer involvement. The first Saturday morning of every month, volunteers gather in the parking lot of Bridge Church, ready and eager to serve. Patty compiles a list of requests that have come in over the previous month, making sure that every task is organized and assigned to a leader. These assignments range from simple chores requiring no experience to more specialized tasks that benefit from skilled hands. In addition to service projects, a care team also makes home visits to widows to provide relational connection and emotional support.

Before setting out, the group joins in prayer, asking for guidance and strength as they prepare to help those in need. This moment of unity serves as a powerful reminder of the greater purpose behind their work. Volunteers often echo the sentiment: "As we serve, we are served." This shared belief fuels their joy and enthusiasm, turning acts of service into moments of deep personal fulfillment.

Moments of Connection

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

For the volunteers, serving is much more than completing tasks—it is an opportunity to connect with the widows they are helping. Every month brings new stories, smiles, and heartfelt exchanges between those serving and those receiving aid. This mutual exchange of kindness and gratitude is at the heart of Care Connections' mission.

After a morning filled with serving together, the volunteers return to Bridge Church, where they are welcomed by another group of volunteers who have prepared a hearty lunch. The room buzzes with energy as everyone gathers around the tables, sharing meals and recounting their experiences. The air is filled with laughter and heartfelt stories of the connections made and tasks accomplished. It is a time of reflection and joy, a moment to celebrate the collective effort of serving others.

A Legacy of Compassion

What began as a personal journey through grief blossomed into a movement that has touched countless lives. Care Connections not only honors Patty’s late husband's memory but also serves as a beacon of hope and compassion for widows navigating their own journeys. As the organization enters its 23rd year, its impact continues to grow, fueled by Patty's unwavering commitment and the dedication of its volunteers. Together, they remind us all that greatness lies not in what we accumulate, but in what we give to others. Patty’s legacy is a powerful testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and the boundless potential of serving one another.
